What NotchVoice does

NotchVoice turns your voice into text in any app. Hold a key, speak, let go, and the text is typed where your cursor is. A small panel at the top of the screen, around the notch, shows that it is listening and what it heard.

  • Dictate anywhere with Apple's on-device speech recognition.
  • Dictate and translate into another language, offline, with Apple's Translation.
  • Clean up what you said with an optional on-device prompt (Apple Intelligence).
  • Transcribe files: drag an audio or video file to the notch and drop it.
  • Read aloud any selected text with the system voices.

Everything runs on your Mac. See the privacy policy.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
  • macOS 26 or later.
  • A microphone (built-in or external).
  • Prompt cleanup needs Apple Intelligence turned on, on a Mac and language that support it. Everything else works without it.

All shortcuts can be changed in Settings → Shortcuts. Settings is in the menu bar icon.

Permissions

NotchVoice asks for three permissions. You can review them any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

1. Microphone

Needed to hear you. Click Allow when macOS asks. If you clicked Don't Allow: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → turn on NotchVoice.

2. Speech Recognition

Lets NotchVoice use Apple's on-device speech recognition. Click Allow when asked, or turn on NotchVoice in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Speech Recognition.

3. Accessibility

Needed to paste text into other apps, to detect your dictation shortcut, and to read selected text aloud.

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility (NotchVoice offers a button that opens it).
  2. Turn on NotchVoice. If it is not listed, click + and choose NotchVoice in Applications.
  3. Quit and reopen NotchVoice if the shortcut does not respond right away.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Holding fn opens the emoji picker or starts macOS Dictation.

macOS also uses the fn (globe) key. Go to System Settings → Keyboard and set Press 🌐 key to “Do Nothing”, and set the macOS Dictation shortcut to something other than fn. Or pick a different trigger in NotchVoice → Settings → Shortcuts.

Nothing happens when I press the shortcut.

Check that NotchVoice is on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. If it is on but still not working, turn it off and on again, then quit and reopen NotchVoice.

The text is not pasted into my app.

Make sure the cursor is in a text field before you finish speaking, and that Accessibility is allowed. Some secure fields (like passwords) block pasting. You can also choose Copy to the clipboard or Insert and copy in Settings → Dictation.

It says my language is not available or is downloading.

The first time you use a language, macOS downloads Apple's on-device speech model for it. Keep your Mac online until it finishes; after that it works offline. Choose your languages in Settings → Language.

Translation does not work.

Translation uses Apple's on-device language packs. Download the pair you need when NotchVoice offers it (or in System Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages).

Prompt cleanup is unavailable.

It needs Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings, on a Mac and language that support it. If it is unavailable, NotchVoice simply pastes your words as dictated.

Where do file transcripts go?

By default, a text file next to the original. You can choose a folder in Settings → Drop Transcription. Any audio or video format macOS can play is supported.

Does NotchVoice keep my recordings or text?

No audio is ever saved. Text is only saved if you turn on transcription history (off by default). See the privacy policy.

How do I open NotchVoice at login?

Turn on Launch at login in Settings → General, or manage it in System Settings → General → Login Items.

Permisos

NotchVoice pide tres permisos.

  2. Activa NotchVoice. Si no aparece, haz clic en + y elige NotchVoice en Aplicaciones.
  3. Si el atajo no responde altiro, cierra y vuelve a abrir NotchVoice.

Problemas y preguntas frecuentes

También puedes elegir Copy to the clipboard o Insert and copy en Ajustes → Dictation.
